ABITARE L'ANTICO

Handcrafted solid-wood coverings and furnishing accessories and ancient materials, belonging to the Italian construction tradition, recovered to be reused whilst preserving the charm and the scent of time.

INTERVENTIONS ON ANCIENT MATERIALS

Interventions for onsite restoring, renovation, maintenance and conservation of pavings, coverings and manufactured items.
Recovery interventions aimed at re-using ancient materials, including removal on site, sorting, treatment.
We work both indoors and outdoors with skilled and qualified personnel, using techniques, equipment and products suitable for the context and surfaces in:

EARTHENWARE
of pavings, walls, ceilings.

CEMENTINE e MAJOLICA
of pavings and coverings.

STONES and MARBLES
for pieces made to measure, door sills, window sills, steps, shelves, columns, capitals, architraves;
for coverings and floors, also artistic, such as: marble granule , marble grit, mosaic, Palladiana.

INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION

Must take into account both the peculiarities of the material used (earthenware, cement or stone) and the precious imperfection of shapes and dimensions that each piece has since its origin, as handmade, because of its removal for recovery. The starting alignments, the installation pattern and the distribution of the material must be established according to the expected pattern and availability; choosing the most suitable installation method: traditional lime mortar or bonding using suitable adhesives, as well as the type of grout for sealing the joints. When the installation is completed, it must be followed by a thorough final cleaning and a treatment cycle for conservation over time, respecting the necessary time between all phases. The installation of old recovered materials requires specific measures that only the experience acquired by qualified installers can guarantee

RESTORING

RESTORING

In the event of disconnections, missing parts, deterioration or when it is necessary to restore the integrity and solidity of the stone work; this operation can be carried out through “trim to fit” operations for the timely replacement of damaged units, or for restoring missing parts, re-sealing the joints, performing grouting or adding consolidating material such as resins, oxalates, polyvinyls.

CLEANING

CLEANING

Aimed at removing dirt, saline efflorescence, limestone incrustations, deposits and surface patinas, concretions of organic substances; for healing and reviving materials, freeing pores and making the subsequent processes and treatments effective. The operation is made by means of machines equipped with rotating brush or manual tools, using water and specific acid or basic-based detergents, through washing, rinsing and liquid suction cycles.

SANDING

SANDING

It allows the removal of deep deposits, installation residues such as cement or lime, tough stains penetrated into materials such as earthenware or soft stones; it is obtained by the abrasive action of variable-grain glass-paper disks mounted on specific machinery. Sanding, carried out on earthenware pavings, attenuates the surface discontinuity restoring a more planar and compact surface and facilitating cleaning and maintenance over time.

SANDBLASTING

SANDBLASTING

Used to restore the homogeneity lost from degraded, altered or blackened surfaces, to remove tough concretions, graffiti or incisions, it is based on the removal of a millimetric layer of matter from the surface of materials such as stone and wood, obtained by ejecting, at high pressure and speed, an abrasive mixture composed of air and sand, or corindon, or carborundum. It can be processed “dry”, “wet”, with “water” or “microsandblasting” depending on the abrasiveness required. The surface will look coarse and rough to the touch, more vulnerable to the aggression of atmospheric agents if not protected by preservative treatments.

LAPPING / POLISHING

LAPPING / POLISHING

It re-establishes the original aesthetic aspect reviving the material’s colour and the shine, both for matt (lapped) and reflective (polished) surfaces. It is carried out with the passage of diamond abrasive discs with gradually finer grain, interrupted by re-grouting operations with a mixture of putty and coloured consolidating resins, possibly ending the operation using a polishing agent to obtain a mirror surface. The intervention makes the surface perfectly flat and it can be carried out both on floors and vertically for façades, columns and coatings in general.

PRESERVATIVE TREATMENTS

PRESERVATIVE TREATMENTS

They are used to preserve the appearance and physical mechanical properties of the material over time, slowing down the degradation processes induced by water and atmospheric agents, as well as the penetration of stains caused by oily or aggressive substances (water-oil repellent / anti-stain treatment). Other popular treatments are made using consolidating agent for friable materials, salt efflorescence reducer, anti-dusting, anti-slip, anti-rising dampness agents. The chosen treatment is applied in several stages, after completing the installation and drying of the completed bedding, always performing a preliminary thorough cleaning of the surfaces; the result will be the application of a thin surface layer having protective function. There are specific chemical (compounds, acids, resins) or natural (waxes, oils) products that will act preserving the opaque or shiny appearance of the material; their duration over time is limited, especially outdoors, it is therefore necessary to perform scheduled maintenance over time.

Rediscovering the timeless value of traditional materials and craftsmanship, we continue the story of Italian Living: a story steeped in culture, ethics and beauty.
